TWO NATIONAL TERROIR AWARDS FOR DURBANVILLE HILLS

TWO NATIONAL TERROIR AWARDS FOR DURBANVILLE HILLS

That Durbanville Hills’ wines are shaped by the landscape was more than amply demonstrated when the winery was announced as a national winner at the South African Terroir Wine Awards in two categories. The 2009 Durbanville Hills Biesjes Craal Sauvignon Blanc and 2011 Merlot Rosé were the top scorers in the Sauvignon blanc and Rosé categories, respectively.

Durbanville Hills cellarmaster Martin Moore is delighted with the results, especially the response of the judges to the recently released Merlot Rosé.

“It’s an honour to receive awards for two different varietals that portray the best in South Africa’s different wine growing areas. We have always marveled at the diversity of the hills surrounding our cellar, our proximity to both the Indian and Atlantic oceans and the swirling mists that drift inland on gentle sea breezes. This unique terroir allows us to produce exceptional wines across a spectrum of varietals.”

The single-vineyard 2009 Durbanville Hills Biesjes Craal Sauvignon blanc is no stranger to awards. Last year it took gold at the Michelangelo International Wine Awards as well as at Veritas and was named one of Wine Magazine’s Top 10 Sauvignon blancs in 2009.

After two years, maturation the wine has achieved a complexity of fruit flavours and a soft texture. The nose is a well balanced combination of fruity green pepper, gooseberry, asparagus and earthiness. On the palate the wine is crisp and fresh with tropical fruit underlined by green pepper and a slight grassiness.

The recently launched 2011 Durbanville Hills Merlot Rosé is a light-bodied and dry wine made exclusively from Merlot grapes. Extremely food-friendly, this wine displays hints of mulberry and raspberries dusted with rose petals on the nose, leading to a dry taste with fresh summer berries on the palate.

The 2009 Durbanville Hills Biesjes Craal is available from the Vinoteque on info@Vinoteque.co.za or telephone number (021) 809-8280 whilst the 2011 Durbanville Hills Merlot Rosé is available at leading liquor outlets at around R37 per bottle.
