Jordan Wine Estate eclipses triple gold Decanter medals by winning a trio of trophies at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show

Jordan Wine Estate is pleased to announce their recent successes when they were awarded three gold medals at the 2013 Decanter Wine Awards, closely followed by a trio of trophies at the 2013 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show.

Now in its tenth year, the Decanter World Wine Awards, widely regarded as the world’s leading wine competition, recently had 219 wine experts from 27 countries, including 75 Masters of Wine and 13 Master Sommeliers gathered in London to taste 14,362 wine entries. The comprehensive list of judges also included three World's Best Sommeliers, including the most recent winner, Paolo Basso. “Of all the wines entered for the Decanter wine awards, only 1.59% received a gold medal so we were thrilled to receive three of the gold medals for South Africa,” said Gary Jordan, geologist-turned owner and winemaker at Jordan Wine Estate.

“Our decision to specialise with varieties suited to our specific slopes has again been rewarded internationally by Decanter when we received a gold medal for our 2009 ‘Cobblers Hill’ Red Bordeaux Blend made from grapes grown on the warmer west-facing side of our estate, as well as gold medals for our 2011 Jordan ‘Nine Yards’ Chardonnay and also for our 2011 Jordan Estate Chardonnay, both grown on the cooler E-facing side of the estate” explained Kathy Jordan, co-owner and winemaker at Jordan Wine Estate. “Last year we won the Decanter International Trophy for the 2010 Nine Yards” she added, “so this year’s trio of gold medals is a fitting follow-up. In addition, this year Jordan Estate won 4 additional Decanter silver and bronze medals.”

“The highest, coolest, Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc site in Stellenbosch is home to ‘The Outlier’, a rich, barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc that turns heads when paired with Chef George Jardine’s incredibly inspiring dishes at the Jordan Restaurant” quipped Gary Jordan, so it wasn’t surprising that ‘The Outlier’ 2012 Sauvignon Blanc received the Sauvignon Blanc Trophy at the 2013 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show. Oz Clarke, one of the international judges said: “I think that Sauvignon Blanc is terribly important for South Africa. You have an ability in South Africa to make more different styles of Sauvignon Blanc probably than any other country in the world.”  The Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show is South Africa’s premier wine competition that recognises the top local wines and winemakers, and honours excellence in the wine industry and is widely regarded as the toughest wine show in the world.

“With this being our 21st vintage and 30 years since Ted and Sheelagh Jordan purchased the property and started replanting the vineyards at Jordan Wine Estate, it is significant that we are able to still win not only the world’s top wine awards, but also send a message about the age-ability and age-worthiness of our best vintages” said Kathy Jordan. “It was therefore also fitting this year to be awarded the Just Riesling Trophy for Best Riesling for the 2009 Jordan Riesling as well as the Old Mutual Trophy for the Best Museum Class Wine for the highest scoring Museum Class gold medallist.”
