Constantia Glen is sharing some aged gems from their Sauvignon Blanc
trove with wine lovers at their tasting room this winter. The older, cool
climate Sauvignon Blanc vintages from as far back as 2007 are still remarkably
vibrant and are showing incredibly well now.
With vineyards located ideally just below the Constantia Nek, the
Constantia Glen Sauvignon Blanc’s distinct characteristics are a true
expression of their unique terroir in close proximity to False Bay. By the
careful selection of grapes from a combination of site specific vineyard blocks
planted with a variety of Sauvignon Blanc clones, Constantia Glen is able to
craft authentic wines that will continue to develop and integrate beautifully
with age.
“Constantia Glen Sauvignon Blanc tends to age very well as a result of
our cool climatic conditions. The wines have fantastic natural acidity with a
low pH, as well as being rich and creamy with good texture and an integrated
minerality,” says winemaker Justin van Wyk.
The bold structure and refreshing natural acidity of the older 2007,
2008 and 2009 Sauvignon Blanc vintages on offer at Constantia Glen, have
allowed the wines to mature optimally under correct storage conditions.
“With age, the Sauvignon Blanc’s racy acidity becomes more integrated
and mellowed, lending a more coated mouthfeel and softer texture. The
fermentation characters and fruity aromas blow off over time, allowing the wine
to show more of its true character and pure grape-derived aromatics. Bottle
aged Sauvignon brings a completely different experience, but the wines still
come across as fresh and vibrant on the palate,” explains van Wyk.
These vintage jewels are a good reason to visit this picturesque wine
estate during winter. If you wish to linger over lunch, you may choose from
their generous platters of artisanal cheese and charcuterie or hearty winter
soups on offer.
Known for exceptional cool
climate Bordeaux-style red and white wines, Constantia Glen is open seven days
a week from 10h00 until 17h00. Look out for the Constantia Glen signs
