Jordan Wine Estate eclipses triple gold Decanter medals by winning a trio of trophies at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show

Jordan Wine Estate eclipses triple gold Decanter medals by winning a trio of trophies at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show

Jordan Wine Estate is pleased to announce their recent successes when they were awarded three gold medals at the 2013 Decanter Wine Awards, closely followed by a trio of trophies at the 2013 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show.

Decanter Awards
Now in its tenth year, the Decanter World Wine Awards, widely regarded as the world’s leading wine competition, recently had 219 wine experts from 27 countries, including 75 Masters of Wine and 13 Master Sommeliers gathered in London to taste 14,362 wine entries. The comprehensive list of judges also included three World's Best Sommeliers, including the most recent winner, Paolo Basso. “Of all the wines entered for the Decanter wine awards, only 1.59% received a gold medal so we were thrilled to receive three of the gold medals for South Africa,” said Gary Jordan, geologist-turned owner and winemaker at Jordan Wine Estate.

“Our decision to specialise with varieties suited to our specific slopes has again been rewarded internationally by Decanter when we received a gold medal for our 2009 ‘Cobblers Hill’ Red Bordeaux Blend made from grapes grown on the warmer west-facing side of our estate, as well as gold medals for our 2011 Jordan ‘Nine Yards’ Chardonnay and also for our 2011 Jordan Estate Chardonnay, both grown on the cooler E-facing side of the estate” explained Kathy Jordan, co-owner and winemaker at Jordan Wine Estate. “Last year we won the Decanter International Trophy for the 2010 Nine Yards” she added, “so this year’s trio of gold medals is a fitting follow-up. In addition, this year Jordan Estate won 4 additional Decanter silver and bronze medals.”

Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show

“The highest, coolest, Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc site in Stellenbosch is home to ‘The Outlier’, a rich, barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc that turns heads when paired with Chef George Jardine’s incredibly inspiring dishes at the Jordan Restaurant” quipped Gary Jordan, so it wasn’t surprising that ‘The Outlier’ 2012 Sauvignon Blanc received the Sauvignon Blanc Trophy at the 2013 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show. Oz Clarke, one of the international judges said: “I think that Sauvignon Blanc is terribly important for South Africa. You have an ability in South Africa to make more different styles of Sauvignon Blanc probably than any other country in the world.”  The Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show is South Africa’s premier wine competition that recognises the top local wines and winemakers, and honours excellence in the wine industry and is widely regarded as the toughest wine show in the world.

“With this being our 21st vintage and 30 years since Ted and Sheelagh Jordan purchased the property and started replanting the vineyards at Jordan Wine Estate, it is significant that we are able to still win not only the world’s top wine awards, but also send a message about the age-ability and age-worthiness of our best vintages” said Kathy Jordan. “It was therefore also fitting this year to be awarded the Just Riesling Trophy for Best Riesling for the 2009 Jordan Riesling as well as the Old Mutual Trophy for the Best Museum Class Wine for the highest scoring Museum Class gold medallist.”

Fleur du Cap wines clinched no less than six 90+ ratings from accomplished wine commentator and British Master of Wine, Tim Atkin, in his report on South African wines released at Wine Fair (22 May 2013).

Atkin, who feels “very positive about the future of Cape wine”, tasted more than 700 wines between December 2012 and April 2013 for his report.

Showing remarkable consistency as one of South Africa’s top dessert wines, Fleur du Cap Noble Late Harvest 2010, the 5th consecutive vintage to achieve a 5-star rating from Platter’s South African Wine Guide, now boasts a stellar score of 95 points from this respected wine writer.

Not to be outdone Fleur du Cap’s Laszlo 2008, Unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon 2010, Unfiltered Sauvignon Blanc 2012 and Unfiltered Semillon 2011 all followed suit with 92-point ratings, whilst the Fleur du Cap Unfiltered  Merlot achieved a score of  90.

BOUCHARD FINLAYSON WINS GOLD TWICE AT DECANTER 2013 WORLD WINE AWARDS

BOUCHARD FINLAYSON WINS GOLD TWICE AT DECANTER 2013 WORLD WINE AWARDS

Bouchard Finlayson Hannibal

Bouchard Finlayson is proud to announce that its Hannibal 2009 and Tête de Cuvée Galpin Peak Pinot Noir 2010 have both won Gold, the highest accolade, at the 2013 Decanter World Wine Awards, which were held in London on Monday 20 May.

The prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards launched in 2004 with just over 4,000 wines, and are now celebrating their 10th anniversary as the world’s leading wine competition. This year, 219 wine experts from 27 countries, including 75 Masters of Wine and 13 Master Sommeliers, gathered in London in April to taste a record-breaking 14,362 wine entries from 52 countries. South Africa entered the third-highest numbers of wines (842), behind Spain with 1616 wines and Australia with 1104. Bouchard Finlayson’s two trophies were amongst a total of 14 awarded to South Africa.

Winemaker and ‘Pinot Pioneer’ Peter Finlayson is delighted with the accolades received for both wines. Explaining Bouchard Finlayson’s Tête de Cuvée Galpin Peak Pinot Noir’s appeal he says that, ‘Tête de Cuvée reflects the winemaker's opportunity to create a blend from a handful of chosen, best barrels in the cellar from a particular vintage. Not every vintage presents suitable quality for this selection - 2010 is arguably our best Pinot Noir vintage since 2005 and 2007. This Tête de Cuvée edition is a barrel selection of the best barrels from the 2010 vintage where the wine matured in 100% new wood, which means more time is required for the ageing and bottle maturation – resulting in greater complexity.’

The essence and soul of the Italian/French blend that is Bouchard Finlayson’s Hannibal meanwhile is captured in the pitching of six grape cultivars into one wine, with Italian Sangiovese as its principal component. All these cultivars are grown on Bouchard Finlayson’s Hemel-en-Aarde Valley terroir which is composed of heavy clay shale soils. In dry years such as 2009 these soils offer red wines of bold composition and abundant complexity. Says Finlayson: ‘Vintage 2009 was predicted to offer stunning results, and I am thrilled for Hannibal 2009 to have been recognised in what is considered to be the most important wine award in the world.’

Both wines are available from the Bouchard Finlayson Vineyard, as well as through Bouchard Finlayson’s Worldwide Agents, including Seckford Agencies Ltd. in the UK.

Winners of the highest accolade, the 32 International Trophies, will be announced on 4 September 2013 at a gala dinner at the Royal Opera House in London.

ABOUT BOUCHARD FINLAYSON

CAPE LEGENDS SHINES AT DECANTER WORLD WINE AWARDS

CAPE LEGENDS SHINES AT DECANTER WORLD WINE AWARDS

Cape Legends, the specialty fine wine sales and marketing division of Distell, saw its wines widely acknowledged at the 2013 Decanter World Wine Awards in London.

Fleur du Cap walked away with the trophy for the best South African sweet wine under ₤15, as well as a gold medal for its 2011 Noble Late Harvest, while Lomond’s 2011 Cat’s Tail Syrah, Plaisir de Merle's 2011 Sauvignon Blanc, Zonnebloem's 2010 Laureat and Uitkyk's 2009 Carlonet, a Cabernet Sauvignon dominated blend, all won gold.

Fewer than 2% of wines entered achieve a sufficiently high score to receive gold in the event billed as the world's biggest wine competition.

"The international affirmation for the wines in the Cape Legends portfolio boosts the reputation of the collection itself, as well as the individual wine brands and provides an important marketing impetus in a highly competitive arena," said Ross Sleet, Marketing Director of Cape Legends.

Cape Winemakers Guild Protégés study with WSET

Cape Winemakers Guild Protégés study with WSET

Elmarie Botes

The Cape Winemakers Guild has expanded its Protégé Programme, an ongoing initiative to further young, aspirant winemakers, by incorporating the internationally-recognised Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) qualifications into its 3-year mentorship scheme.

The first participant in the WSET Level 3 course is Elmarie Botes, a 3rd year Protégé who begins her classes in June. Elmarie is currently completing her internship with Gary Jordan, one of 45 members of the Cape Winemakers Guild, an association of peers representing the pinnacle of South African winemaking. The WSET course affords Protégés the rare opportunity to learn from experienced masters the likes of Cathy van Zyl MW, Richard Kershaw MW, Master of Wine students, WSET Diploma graduates and other industry specialists.

The International Wine Education Centre is currently the only approved programme provider of WSET courses in South Africa. Owner and educator, Cathy Marston, is delighted that the CWG has chosen to invest in the Protégés by giving them such a truly global opportunity.

“Today’s winemakers cannot expect to just hide in the cellar and make wine – there’s far more to the job than that! They need to travel, to understand their customers wherever they are, to understand the competition and international markets and to use this knowledge to improve the wines they make themselves,” says Cathy. “WSET Level 3 offers a solid and thorough grounding in all international wines and wine styles and in addition, gives the protégées a real connection with other winemakers and marketers around the world, many of whom will have studied the exact same course as them.”

The UK-based WSET was established in 1969 and currently offers qualifications in 17 languages and in 60 countries, including South Africa. Last year, more than 43,000 people enrolled for a WSET qualification making them the largest wine and spirit education authority in the world.

“The WSET course augments the practical experience gained while working side by side in the cellar with our members. We want our Protégés to develop into highly skilled winemakers with the confidence and deep understanding of the world of wine, not just in the cellar or on our shores but in the global vineyard,” says Louis Strydom, Chairman of the Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Development Trust.

The Protégé Programme was launched in 2006 under the auspices of the Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Development Trust with the goal of bringing about transformation in the wine industry by cultivating, nurturing and empowering promising individuals to become winemakers of excellence.

The Guild currently has seven Protégés enrolled in the programme. Qualifications in either Cellar Technology at Elsenburg Agricultural College or Oenology and Viticulture at the University of Stellenbosch are minimum requirements for admission to the programme.

For more information on the Guild, contact Tel: 021 852 0408 or send an email to info@capewinemakersguild.com Students interested in applying for the Protégé Programme can visit the Guild’s website at www.capewinemakersguild.com

FAIRTRADE PLACE IN THE SUN WINES TO BACK CELEBRITY FUNDRAISER

FAIRTRADE PLACE IN THE SUN WINES TO BACK CELEBRITY FUNDRAISER

Fairtrade-accredited wine brand Place in the Sun that uses trade rather than aid to enhance the lives of wine-farm workers, is spreading its optimism by supporting a tasty and innovative charity drive to raise funds for children's health.

The brand is one of the key sponsors and the only wine involved in the current Col'Cacchio pizzeria celebrity chef initiative, now in its fifth year. From now until the end of August, the national gourmet pizzeria chain is offering a series of designer pizzas, created by high-profile personalities. Every month a new pizza will be featured, with R5 from the sale of each going to the Children's Hospital Trust.

Pizza lovers will have the choice of Place in the Sun Sauvignon Blanc and Place in the Sun Shiraz, a gold medallist at last year's Decanter Wine Awards in London, to pair with their celebrity pizzas.

"We salute this drive for its ability to make a difference in the lives of others. Last year, when we were also involved, R300 000 was raised for the trust that supports the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital and paediatric healthcare in the Western Cape," said global marketing spokesperson for Place in the Sun, Dè-Mari Kellerman. "This year, funds raised will go towards the building of South Africa's first Childsafe Research and Educational Centre."

She said in the same way that diners would be assisting child health by ordering the designer pizzas, every time they ordered Place in the Sun wines, they would be helping the farm workers involved.

"The Devon Valley farmers who supply the grapes for Place in the Sun are paid a premium for their fruit that goes towards upliftment projects. Workers decide themselves on how the money will be spent. To date it has gone towards education, sporting initiatives, home improvements, the creation of vegetable gardens and community-based recreational activities."

Col'Cacchio's celebrity chef pizzas start this month (May) with an innovative Asian-style pizza created by chef, cook book author and teacher, Liam Tomlin. In June, diners can try an Indian-inspired pizza, created by extreme adventurer David Grier. His offering involves a spiced mash potato base, chicken tikka and a host of other oriental flavours. Charly's Bakery has designed the July pizza with fior di latte mozzarella, roasted cherry tomatoes and oven-roasted artichoke hearts.

Col'Cacchio pizzeria will be challenging diners to create their own gourmet pizzas online in a competition to find the fourth celebrity chef. The six finalists, chosen by popular public vote, will compete against each other in a web-based reality series to find the chef whose pizza will be offered to diners during August.

The winner will not only earn the title of celebrity chef but also be entitled to Col 'Cacchio pizza for a year.

Hartenberg Estate reaps Gold at Decanter World Wine Awards

Hartenberg Shiraz 2009

Hartenberg's dedication to produce fine Shiraz spanning more than 40 years
has been rewarded at the 2013 Decanter World Wine Awards in London with a
Regional Gold medal.

The Decanter Gold medal for the Hartenberg Estate Shiraz 2009 is the latest
in a long line of prestigious awards for the producer of the world's No. 1
Shiraz after The Stork 2008 was declared overall winner by Syrah du Monde in
2012.

Carl Schultz, Cellarmaster at Hartenberg Estate says: "The 2009 vintage is
considered by many to be one of the best, if not the best in memory. The
award is just recognition for our Estate Shiraz which has been produced for
over four decades. This wine underpins the two single vineyard Shiraz wines
our Estate produces."

Considered as one of the biggest global wine competitions, the results of
the 30th Decanter World Wine Awards were announced at the London Trade Fair.
This year's competition saw a total of 14 362 wines from 52 countries judged
by a panel of 75 Masters of Wine and 13 Master Sommeliers.

Hartenberg Wine Estate's impressive underground maturation cellar allows
Carl to age his wines for a minimum of four years, allowing them to reach
their full potential prior to release. The Hartenberg Shiraz 2009, which
will only be released later this year, features elegant aromas of spices,
violets and berries, whilst the palate is rich and silky with soft, ripe
tannins that lend the wine its structure.

Morgenster announces its hospitality project

Morgenster announces its hospitality project

15 May 2013 Giulio Bertrand, owner of Morgenster Wine and Olive Estate in Somerset West near Cape Town, has announced the commencement of his long planned hospitality phase which will see the Estate offering accommodation, fine dining and a café and deli experience to visitors. Bertrand explains:

“After I bought Morgenster in 1992 as a retirement home and had restored the historical buildings, I realised that I owned a wine farm with magnificent terroir. I put retirement on hold and went to France to judge whether Morgenster could produce wines in line with the best from Bordeaux. There I was introduced to Pierre Lurton of Chateau Cheval Blanc who I invited to Morgenster. He was as inspired as I was about the farm’s potential and we began establishing vineyards of Bordeaux varieties and building a cellar. After 15 years of Pierre consulting to our local winemaking team and being on our Board of Directors, Morgenster’s cellar of marvellously aging Bordeaux styled red wines has earned acclaim internationally and locally.

“Being Italian and accustomed to having olives growing with vines, I established over 50 hectares of olive groves for table olives and extra virgin olive oil. Morgenster’s oil has received the world’s highest accolade of “Best blended olive oil in the world, 2006 L’Extravergine”. It has also received 97 points out of a possible 100 in the last four editions of the Flos Olei Guide to the World’s Best Extra Virgin Olive Oils, making it one of the top seven oils in the world for consistent quality at that level over years 2010 – 2013.

“While I was establishing the working farm to the quality I wanted, I had the idea of developing a second phase to give visitors more opportunity to enjoy the Morgenster experience.

“We are therefore creating an inside/outside café and deli from which we will serve light meals, situated next to our wine and olive tasting room.

“Secondly, we are renovating and converting the existing cottages on the Estate into luxury accommodation offering beautiful views of our vines and olive groves.

“Finally there will be changes to Field House which is in our meadow facing the tasting room. For the last two and a half years chef Craig Cormack has run Sofia’s at Morgenster from that venue. From the end of May Craig moves to a new venture, leaving with our thanks and best wishes. The building will be remodelled in line with the requirements of our new fine dining partner and will offer lunches and dinners.

“We are currently in high level discussions with a family of world renowned chefs and expect to announce shortly who our dining partner will be for Morgenster’s Restaurant and Café.

“I am happy to welcome back Judi Dyer as Managing Director of Morgenster with effect from the beginning of May. Judi returns to Morgenster after four years, bringing a wealth of fine dining and wine marketing expertise with her to lead our team into this new phase of the Estate’s 302 year history.

“When I first saw Morgenster it was love at first sight. I have never felt so attracted to a place like I was with Morgenster. I believe the time is right to present this lovely Estate for the enjoyment of more people and I am looking forward to this phase of my retirement!”

NEDERBURG'S SCORES TOP MARKS WITH UK CRITICS

NEDERBURG'S SCORES TOP MARKS WITH UK CRITICS

Nederburg Ingenuity White Blend

Nederburg's 2011 Ingenuity White, an eight-way blend led by Sauvignon blanc, has been identified as one of South Africa's top white blends by Decanter, scoring 93 points, while Tim Atkin MW has given the same wine 94, in his newly released SA Report.

It was singled out by Decanter for its "Fresh, bright, lifted aromatics of white flowers and stone fruit," and described as "Tight, complex, (and having a ) firm palate with lifted spice (with a) Creamy texture (and as) Very well made and intriguing".

The 2011 blend comprises 35% Sauvignon blanc, 15% Semillon, 14% Chardonnay, 10% Chenin blanc, 8% Viognier, 2% Gewurztraminer and 2% Verdelho.

Nederburg's Ingenuity collection of limited-edition, unusual blends, forms the apex of the range and provides an "exciting opportunity for innovation", says cellar master Razvan Macici. The Ingenuity Red is an Italian-style blend of Sangiovese, Barbera and Nebbiolo, and has also been critically acclaimed, with Atkin scoring the 2009 vintage, 91.

"These are complex, layered wines styled to work extremely well as partners to food," adds the head of the Nederburg team, who earned the 2012 Diner's Club Winemaker of the Year title.

Atkin also scored Nederburg's 2011 Winemaster Reserve Noble Late Harvest 93.

There were two others to which he gave high scores. Both from the recently released Heritage Heroes ensemble, they were the 2011 The Young Airhawk Sauvignon Blanc, with 91 and the 2011 The Anchorman Chenin Blanc with 90.

Last year Nederburg was judged the South African producer of the year at the International Wine & Spirit Competition.

SILKY RED FROM DURBANVILLE HILLS FOR FATHER’S DAY

SILKY RED FROM DURBANVILLE HILLS FOR FATHER’S DAY

Hills Range - Bastion

If dad enjoys a fine bottle of wine, treat him this Father’s Day to the 2011 Durbanville Hills Bastion, an elegant 50/50 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The grapes for this wine were sourced from a number of vineyards, some higher up on the hills and others lower down on the valley floor. According to red winemaker Wilhelm Coetzee, this velvety, fruity blend is sure to impress any dad’s discerning palate.

The vineyards of the Durbanville hills all benefit from the area’s cool climate which is particularly suited to the making of elegant, smooth Cabernet Sauvignon while spice and pepper is the trademark of the Shiraz. Blending these two cultivars combines the smoothness of the Cabernet Sauvignon and tones down the spiciness of the Shiraz to create the perfect balance of fruit and pepper aromas. The wine was matured for 12 months, using predominately French oak of which a small percentage was new wood to prevent wood domination and ensure that the elegance of the fruit is preserved.

This full-bodied wine with its hints of red plums and cherries, pepper and spice is perfect to enjoy with a braai.  Available from leading liquor stores and supermarkets, the 2011 Durbanville Hills Bastion retails for around R67 per bottle.

FINLAND A MAJOR EXPORT DESTINATION FOR TWO OCEANS WINES

FINLAND A MAJOR EXPORT DESTINATION FOR TWO OCEANS WINES

Finland  has an estimated population of around just 5,3 million people, yet remarkably, it has become one of the leading markets for Two Oceans wines, says global marketing manager Jackie Olivier. Sales volumes to this northern European country have grown by double digits year-on-year for the 12 months to March 2013.

Now the third biggest destination for the brand, Finland sells the approachably styled, great value wines through the state-run monopoly, Alko.  Canada remains its biggest market, followed by South Africa.

With 350 stores and an annual turnover of R14,32 bn, Alko, according to its most recent annual report, sold 56,4 million litres of wine last year, slightly up from 2011. South Africa was Alko’s second biggest supplier of white wines in 2012, with a 17% share of the segment, behind Chile with 21,5%.

Volumes of South African whites sold through the monopoly were up by 1,1% on the previous year. South African reds were in sixth position with a 9,4% share of the category, with sales volumes growing 2,7%.

South Africa occupied third position when it came to total wine sales in Finland in 2012, as year-on-year sales volumes rose by 6,4%. Chile was in the lead, followed by Spain.

Olivier said Two Oceans continued to benefit from the Finnish appetite for smooth-drinking, well-priced wines and was significantly outpacing South Africa's growth in the market. The brand's approachable styling and market positioning and the regular communication of its international quality awards, including those from Finland's Vuoden Viinit Kilpailu, had also helped to boost sales. The Shiraz, for example, was one of Alko's top ten sellers.

She confirmed that most of the Two Oceans wines offered in Finland were sold in a 3-litre bag-in-box format, in line with the Northern European preference for boxed wines but that a 750ml red blend would also soon be listed.

"We tailor our packaging to suit individual markets. The versatility of the range has seen Two Oceans grow sales in a mix of developed and developing markets. To give you an idea, there has been good growth in New Zealand but also in countries as varied as Indonesia and Brazil."

Last year the brand won several medals and best buy ratings at the 2012 World Value Wine Challenge, held in the US.

Veritas & SA Young Wine closing date for entries

Veritas & SA Young Wine closing date for entries

WINE MAKERS, SAVE THESE DATES

Entries for two of South Africa’s most prominent wine competitions are open and those with an eye on the top accolades should pull their calendars closer. While the closing date for entries for the country’s oldest wine competition, the SA Young Wine Show is 8 July, wine and brandy masters have until 21 August to enter their finest for Veritas.

Young Wine Show
The 180 year old SA Young Wine Show is this country’s only competition expressly for wines from the current vintage. Annually cellars enter close to 2000 wines to match their current wine making styles with those of their peers. Wines are entered in seventeen categories and while the highest praise goes to the wine makers receiving the General Smuts trophy for the overall champion, and the Pietman Hugo trophy for the cellar with the highest marks for five different entries, winning a SA Champion is also a big accolade.

Judging of the young wines takes place at the Nederburg Auction Complex from 22 to 26 July and the winners will be announced on 15 August.

Veritas
Being awarded a Veritas double gold is undoubtedly a proud feather in the cap of local wine makers and brandy masters. This authoritative competition has earned the respect of wine aficionados the world over due to its stringent blind judging procedures and every year some 1700 market ready wines and brandies put their best foot forward in the hope of earning the coveted Veritas symbol of quality.  Late entries will be accepted until 29 August (at an increased entry fee).  Judging of the entered brandies takes place on 13 September while the magnitude of wines will be tasted from 16 to 20 September.  Entry and judging dates are two weeks later than previous years awarding wineries and distilleries additional time to prepare.

This year’s top-notch wines and brandies deserving of the double gold, gold, silver and bronze Veritas emblem will be announced on 5 October during a gala dinner at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC).

Visit www.youngwineshow.co.za and www.veritas.co.za for full information and entry forms, or contact Elsabe Ferreira at 021 863 1599, fax 021 863 1552 or via email to admin@veritas.co.za.

DU TOITSKLOOF’S MUSCADEL TAKES GOLD

DU TOITSKLOOF’S MUSCADEL TAKES GOLD

The 2012 Du Toitskloof Red Muscadel received gold at the 2013 Muscadel SA awards, the country’s only competition dedicated to the promotion of exceptional Muscadel wines.

The grapes for this wine were harvested from a single block of 10-year-old Muscat de Frontignan bush vines which yielded only 6 tons/ha. By harvesting when the berries had already become raisiny, a wonderful combination of raisins, tea-leaf, honey, roses, luscious litchi and mango flavours were achieved in the wine.

The wine goes equally well on a cold winter’s evening next to the fire as it does on a late sunny afternoon served with crushed ice. Pair it with cured meats and cheeses or add it to your soups just before dishing up, simmer it along with lamb shanks or add a dash when preparing the sauce for your roast leg of lamb.

The Du Toitskloof Red Muscadel is available from leading liquor outlets and the cellar, and retails for about R45 per bottle.

Master baker Eric Lanlard charms guests at Simonsig’s Cuvée

Master baker Eric Lanlard charms guests at Simonsig’s Cuvée
Head Chef Lucas Carstens, Debbie Thompson, Eric & Francios Malan

Chocoholics indulged in a decadent affair with celebrity chef Eric Lanlard at the launch of his latest recipe book, Chocolat, at Simonsig Estate’s signature restaurant, Cuvée.

Teaming up with Cuvée’s resident chef, Lucas Carstens, guests were treated to a chocolate inspired luncheon in the heart of the Stellenbosch Winelands. First up was a most unusual yet triumphant creamy carrot risotto with carrot crisps and blue cheese drenched in a delicate white chocolate sauce.  This was followed by another coup for Lucas – a hearty cocoa crusted springbok loin. The luncheon ended with not one, but two of Eric’s desserts, a chocolate soufflé straight from the pages of Chocolat and an ever so dreamy chocolate tart.

Eric, who’s favourite South African Méthode Cap Classique is the Simonsig Cuvée Royale, also added a dash of South African flair to the London launch of Chocolat at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel, by introducing his guests to Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut Rosé.

In Chocolat, Eric reveals his tried and tested techniques with a new selection of chocolate-based recipes – from indulgent chocolate drinks, tarts, muffins and mousses to gâteaux, petits fours and elaborate creations for special occasions.  He also gives some valuable tips on how to buy the best ingredients to create his decadent treats.

To read more about Chocolat, available in leading book stores at around R300 per book from June 2013 visit www.penguinbooks.co.za or www.cake-boy.co.uk

Fleur du Cap inspires Gautengers at exciting wine and salt pairing dinner

Fleur du Cap inspires Gautengers at exciting wine and salt pairing dinner

Tanith Quait

Fleur du Cap and salt aficionado Craig Cormack inspired Gautengers with a unique salt pairing dinner with superb wines and salts from around the world at the University of Pretoria.

Craig took the Stellenbosch Winelands straight to the doorstep of Eat @ UP on the University campus where he prepared an inspirational three course meal paired to perfection with the Fleur du Cap Unfiltered wines in association with the University’s Department of Consumer Science.

Inspired by nature, Fleur du Cap wines lend themselves ideally to Craig’s pairings. Salt, considered by alchemists as nature’s 5th element, is an ancient natural product and an essential ingredient in food.

Known for his exceptional winelands food and wine dinners with salts from around the world held in Die Bergkelder, the famous “cellar in the mountain” and home to Fleur du Cap wines in Stellenbosch, Craig is passionate about sourcing and experimenting with different types of salt and boasts an impressive collection of rare salts from around the globe. He has been pairing wine and salt for more than five years.

“One of the challenges when pairing salt and wine is to create food that will enhance the wine without dominating it. The natural process of making Fleur du Cap Unfiltered wines works particularly well with unrefined, artisanal salts, reverting back to nature in both the food and the wine,” says Craig.

Simonsig Tiara clinches Gold at Concours Mondial de Bruxelles

Simonsig Tiara clinches Gold at Concours Mondial de Bruxelles

Simonsig Estate has upped the stakes by clinching a Gold medal for its Bordeaux-style red, the Tiara 2009 at the 20th Concours Mondial de Bruxelle.

Proudly wearing the crown as this family owned estate's flagship red wine for over two decades, the Tiara 2009 competed against 8 200 wines and spirits from 50 producer countries in this prestigious competition held in Bratislava, Slovakia. On the local front this wine was also awarded a Gold medal by the 2012 Veritas Wine Awards.

“Great harmony, intensity and elegance are what we strive for when crafting our flagship red and there is no room for compromise on quality,” says Simonsig cellarmaster Johan Malan.

Driven by Cabernet Sauvignon (76%), Simonsig Tiara 2009 is a sensual yet substantial wine reminiscent of a deep red, textured Persian carpet. Its intense ripe black berry and cherry flavours with hints of cigar box, are enriched by whiffs of graphite adding depth and dimension to this full circle Bordeaux-style blend.

Johan recommends Simonsig Tiara 2009 with robust beef and venison dishes. The wine sells at R190 at the cellar door and selected fine wine outlets countrywide.

Orange River Cellars triumph at the 2013 Muskadel SA awards

Orange River Cellars triumph at the 2013 Muskadel SA awards

Musk SA Gold & Platinum 2013

Orange River Cellars celebrate two top achievements at the 11th Muskadel SA awards, sponsored by Enartis SA, and hosted on 23 May at Noop Restaurant, Paarl.  Of the 26 entrants, Orange River Cellars’ Red Muscadel 2012 was the only wine to be awarded a Platinum award at this year’s competition, while their White Muscadel 2012 was awarded Gold.

“It is a wonderful honour and experience to receive this accolade from SA Muskadel; an achievement we are proud of,” says Jim de Kock from Orange River Cellars.

Other winners

The Breede River Valley proved their worth as Muscadel region with three Gold medals; Rooiberg Winery Red Muscadel 2012, Mooiuitsig Winery Oude Rust Rooi Muscadel 2012 and Du Toitskloof Winery Red Muscadel 2012.

According to Henri Swiegers, chairperson of Muskadel SA and winemaker in the Breede River Valley, a Muscadel wine prefers dry, warm weather conditions, with enough water to irrigate the vineyards proficiently.  “This results in high sugar content and acidic pH levels that are the key to a successful Muscadel.  South African producers are very committed and always strive to deliver the best quality product.”

Judging

Tasted blind, the wines are judged and scored according to a tried and tested points system.  The uniqueness of the packaging also contributes to the final points tally.  Consumers can identify winning Muscats by the Gold or Platinum Muskadel SA stickers on the bottle.

“I think this year’s entries were better than ever before.  The Muscats have a good complexity and depth in flavour,” says Dave Biggs, respected judge and wine fundi, about this year’s entries.

Sponsor

Enartis SA has been involved with the Muscadel association for the past six years.  “Muscadel is one of the best wines produced by the South African wine industry each year, and the best worldwide.  The stigma that Muscats are only a dessert and winter wine is long gone.  Enartis SA in association with Muskadel SA has changed this and will build on this reputation for years to come.”

Enartis SA also delivers a service in the form of professional, technical advice in all forms of wine producing techniques.

“We are proud to associate our name with this unique wine and we carry their interest at heart,” says Steven Baard, Sales Manager at Enartis SA.

BOUCHARD FINLAYSON TO SHOWCASE ITS REDS AT TUTORED TASTINGS IN JOHANNESBURG (5 June) AND CAPE TOWN (11 June)

BOUCHARD FINLAYSON TO SHOWCASE ITS REDS AT TUTORED TASTINGS
IN JOHANNESBURG (5 June) AND CAPE TOWN (11 June)

Bouchard Finlayson 2010 Tete De Cuvee

Bouchard Finlayson’s popular series of Tutored Wine Tastings continues this June in both Cape Town and Johannesburg. With informal settings in central locations, these public events are designed to give wine enthusiasts the chance to learn more about Bouchard Finlayson’s special vintages.

Winemaker and ‘Pinot Pioneer’ Peter Finlayson himself will present Bouchard Finlayson's Reds: Hannibal and Pinot Noir in Johannesburg on Wednesday 5 June from 18:30 - 20:00, at the Croft & Co Deli in Parkview. Wine lovers will have the opportunity to taste up to 10 different wines and learn more from the expert himself. The wines will be sampled alongside tasty treats from Croft & Co (catering cost per person: R150).

Capetonians won’t miss out, as they will be able to experience the same tasting on Tuesday 11 June at Kyoto Garden Sushi on Kloof Nek Road, taking place from 18:00 – 19:30. This tasting will be hosted by Oenologist Jessica Saurwein, assisted by Lizette Kühn, with Kyoto Garden Sushi providing snacks to match the wines presented (catering cost per person: R150).

Pinot noir is Peter Finlayson’s Pièce de Résistence. His Bouchard Finlayson Tête de Cuvée Pinot noir 2010 has just won Gold at the world’s leading wine competition, the Decanter World Wine Awards in London; while last year his Bouchard Finlayson Tête de Cuvée Pinot noir 2009 scored Gold at the Five Nations Wine Challenge 2012 in Sydney, as the only South African winery to obtain an award for Pinot noir. Locally, the Nedbank Green Wine Awards 2012 voted his Bouchard Finlayson Galpin Peak Pinot noir 2011 as Best Red Wine in the newly introduced Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI) category.

At the upcoming tutored tastings Finlayson also looks forward to introducing guests to the delights of Bouchard Finlayson Hannibal, whose 2009 vintage has also just won Gold at the Decanter World Wine Awards: ‘Hannibal’s concept is based on its original design of mixing French and Italian cultivars. The essence and soul of this Italian, French blend is captured in the pitching of six grape cultivars into one wine – Italian Sangiovese as its principal component, plus Pinot noir, Nebbiolo, Mourvedré, Barbera and Shiraz. All these cultivars are grown in our unique Hemel-en-Aarde Valley terroir, which is composed of heavy clay soils. In dry years these soils offer red wines of bold composition and abundant complexity – red cherry, flowers and a whiff of truffle on the nose, with a little spice. It will be my pleasure to share some of the older Hannibal vintages to guests at the upcoming tasting events.’

Bookings are essential – please contact info@bouchardfinlayson.co.za or Tel 028 312 3515.
Further Tutored Tastings will be scheduled for later in the year – details to be announced on Bouchard Finlayson’s blog in due course.

FOOD HOSPITALITY WORLD’S FINANCIAL COMMITMENT TO SOUTH AFRICA

Business-to-business will benefit when the global hospitality event launches in Cape Town in 2014

Food Hospitality World is a new “global event” for the food and hospitality industries organised by Fiera Milano which already takes place in Italy, China, India and Brazil. Cape Town will, for the first time, become part of this exciting global initiative in 2014.

The launch of Food Hospitality World in Cape Town in May 2014 will turn the Mother City into the culinary capital of South Africa and the African Diaspora and will help attract much-needed investment into the country.

Fiera Milano, the leading worldwide trade fair organisers based of Milan, Italy, has become a major player in the African marketplace. It is the driving force behind Food Hospitality World which will showcase the best of South African and African hospitality to an industry seeking fresh markets.

The event is set to deliver bigger and better business opportunities for companies and trade professionals. The show connects hundreds of exhibitors across numerous product categories where key national players and promising international exhibitors have the opportunity to interface. It also serves to establish contacts for those wanting to enter the market and there are important seminars and presentation delivered by experts in the field to help find vital solutions to universal problems.

Food Hospitality World in Cape Town is expected to provide a tremendous boost to South African food-based products and services and will also showcase both local and international exhibitors.

Fiera Milano, which already has the popular annual Good Food and Wine Show under its banner, will launch Food Hospitality World at next year’s Good Food and Wine Show. The exhibitions will follow each other and will run for an entire week at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Food Hospitality World runs from Monday to Wednesday May 19 to 21 with the Good Food & Wine Show following from Thursday to Sunday May 22 to 25, 2014.

Cape Town now joins other major international cities - Milan, Sao Paulo, Mumbai, Bangalore, Guangzhou and from next September also Istanbul - in hosting what is likely to become one of the most significant events on the South African business calendar.

Food Hospitality World combines Italian Tuttofood (food and beverage) and HOST (hospitality) and it’s a trade fair that differs from the Good Food and Wine Show because it functions as a “business-to-business” initiative.

The Mother City is the gateway to Africa and the City of Cape Town is heavily involved in promoting the exhibition which will attract clients from far afield.

Sales and Marketing Director Louise Cashmore says: “The launch of Food Hospitality World, which is Fiera Milano’s mother brand, will add another dynamic dimension to Cape Town and afford business people in the industry an exciting opportunity to participate in the largest food showcase on the continent. The South African hospitality industry is recognised worldwide and this gives its key players and chance to interact with their international counterparts which can only be of benefit to all concerned.”

A spokesperson from Fiera Milano says the rich investment this initiative will bring to the city will help ignite interest, promote opportunities and employment and manoeuvre Cape Town into a unique position on the African continent. It will attract investment and ideas that will unite all those important players in the hospitality industry. The added burst of investment potential will bring benefits not only to Cape Town but to South Africa as a whole.
