Wine lovers can now enjoy Simonsig Estate’s Frans Malan Reserve 2008, a formidable Cape Blend which clinched a Veritas gold medal last year.

The Malan family of Simonsig created this wine as a tribute to the visionary patriarch, Frans Malan, a craftsman of superior wines who left an indelible legacy in the Cape Winelands. Simonsig Estate is one of the early protagonists of the Cape Blend, a truly South Arifrican wine with the Pinotage varietal as a key component.

“It is so rewarding to see that my father’s pioneering spirit lives on with great success. What started out as a mould-breaking experiment with Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon for the Cape Winemakers Guild way back in 1991, has since evolved into one of the ‘blue blood’ reds in our portfolio,” says Simonsig cellarmaster Johan Malan.

This deep Persian Carpet red wine, akin to a complex and elegant tapestry, is hand stitched with sweet mulberry Pinotage (73%) notes, Cabernet Sauvignon (22%) pencil shavings and luscious Merlot (5%) black berries. Refined tannins unite with well-balanced oak thus completing the characteristics of these three varietals that make up this acclaimed Cape Blend. It is the perfect partner to succulent meat dishes such as delicious Egyptian dukka crusted beef fillet medallions, flavoursome springbok espetada or roast duck.

Simonsig Frans Malan Reserve 2008 is available from R155 per bottle at fine wine outlets countrywide or directly from the cellar.
