Definition of a natural wine

Definition of a natural wine…………..

Designed to present the character of the place, grapes and growing season responsible for it as faithfully as possible.

Site specificity is a key bonus after all we want to drink wine with a sense of place and not a mass produced soft drink.....

It is likely to have been made in a small quantities by an individualists, grown either organically or biodynamically (although it may well not have been certified as such).

Not interventionist approach in the cellar, hands off man, resist the temptation……… Please……..

No added yeast, just those present in the vineyard and cellar.

No physical manipulations such as pumping over oxygen through the wine to soften it or filtering it to rid it of alcohol or water (the famous black or green snake….) no make up, no Botox.

Naked wine as pure as it gets!

No added sugar, grape concentrate, acid, tannin or preservative, other than minimal levels of sulphur.

Most are not aware that Sulphur is a natural by product of fermentation, so all wines contain some, but in general the reds will have under 10mg/l and whites under 20mg/l of sulphur dioxide, less than a tenth of maximum levels allowed!

Will be interesting to see how many wines fits in the above……..
