ALLESVERLOREN STAYS ON TOP IN SWEDEN
After winning Sweden’s highest wine honour last year, Allesverloren is again in the news with three of its wines on that country’s list of top 100 best wine bargains for this year. The Swartland estate’s 2008 Touriga Nacional took first place, while the 2008 Tinta Barocca came 18th and the 2009 Shiraz, 56th on the list compiled by Alt Om Mat, one of Sweden’s foremost lifestyle magazines.
Fifth-generation winemaker at Allesverloren, Danie Malan, was chosen as Alt Om Mat’s 2010 International Producer of the Year in its annual Golden Glass competition. Up against several European finalists, his success was due in part to his pioneering use of traditional port varietals to make classically styled natural red table wines.
Although Sweden is one of South Africa’s major export markets, this was the first time in the 53-year history of the award that it went to a South African winemaker.
Allesverloren’s biggest export market is, in fact, Sweden. Of the four reds produced on this estate on the slopes of the Kasteelberg, the Touriga Nacional, a Veritas gold medallist, and the Tinta Barocca, are made from what are primarily port cultivars. Allesverloren is one of the very few South African producers using these cultivars for making table wines.
Deep ruby red in colour, the 2008 Touriga Nacional shows abundant aromas of ripe berries, cherries and nuts followed by tobacco and coffee in the background. It is a full-bodied wine with a firm tannic structure, lots of ripe berry and tobacco flavours, spicy undertones and a long-lasting finish.
Many industry observers these days regard the Swartland as one of the Cape’s highest-potential wine-growing regions, and it has become the focus of many top local and international wine critics.
