Strandveld Vineyards, Africa’s southernmost winery situated in
the Agulhas district, has shown its mettle as a first class producer of cool
climate Sauvignon Blanc with the release of the First Sighting 2014 vintage.
Shaped by a warmer summer with less wind
and higher sea temperatures, the First Sighting Sauvignon Blanc 2014 teems with
tropical fruit flavours on the nose and slightly less minerality than its
predecessor, while still expressing its undeniable Elim character.
Seasoned winemaker Conrad Vlok says wine lovers will definitely
not be shy to top up their glasses with this easy drinking 2014 release, which
marks yet another highlight in his decade of winemaking at Strandveld
Vineyards.
“Even though Summer 2013 was one of the
warmest in decades, our First Sighting Sauvignon Blanc 2014 has triumphed with
a beautiful balance and slightly lower alcohol and acidity, which is exactly
what makes this a great summer quaffer,” says Conrad, who enjoys sipping the
wine most with a wide variety of antipasti.
The First Sighting Sauvignon Blanc 2014 is full on the palate,
showing great complexity imparted by a small component (12%) of Semillon and
six months lees contact prior to bottling.
The young Elim wine ward is no stranger to praise for its
Sauvignon Blanc, having received the stamp of approval from highly regarded UK
wine critic and Master of Wine, Jancis Robinson: “The decidedly cool Elim, near
Cape Agulhas, is clearly capable of making notably fine Sauvignon Blanc.”
