Pella Stellenbosch Syrah 2007 91 Points

From a north facing 40 year old vineyard established in 1972, yielding a mere 1.5 tons per hectare, the soil is predominantly poor gravel and pot clay, still vibrant ruby red for a 5 years old Stellenbosch Syrah, with the faintest evolution, slight garnet towards the rim.

Clean, moderate intensity, peppery, Darjeeling tea leaf, with subtle ripe plums, blueberries and hints of cassis, saline mineral core, with delicate oaking of which 20% were new oak for 20 months, leather complexity, excellent purity of fruit, layers of complexity.

Dry with moderate plus acidity, very fresh, textured mid palate firmed up with bright ripe tannins, almost chalky structure, the alcohol is very high at 14.5% abv, however very smartly integrated, almost unnoticeable, long and persistent savory lenght, drinking well now, yet have stamina for at least another 6 years of cellaring, best from 2015 until 2019+, very charming.
