5th triumph for Simonsig on ABSA Top 10 Pinotage hot list

Simonsig Estate, one of South Africa’s most celebrated Pinotage producers, has clinched its 5th triumph in the closely contested 2012 ABSA Top Ten Pinotage Competition with winemaker Debbie Thompson’s prized Redhill Pinotage.

Taking pride of place amongst the 2012 Top 10, Simonsig Redhill Pinotage 2010 stands firm as one of the country’s definitive Pinotages proving its consistency and mastery of this proudly South African varietal.

The 2010 vintage is Debbie’s 4th Red Hill Pinotage to make the Top 10 ranking since joining the Malan family of Simonsig as red winemaker in 1999. Simonsig Estate is one of only two producers with five wines in the Top 10 rankings since start of the competition in 1997. The acclaimed Top 10 Redhill Pinotage vintages are 1999, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2010.

“The Redhill Pinotage represents the true beauty of our home grown varietal. Our terroir creates an optimum playground for Pinotage with fruit filled pockets and well-structured tannins. It is rewarding to be acknowledged as one of the ten best ambassadors of this red wine variety,” says Debbie, who loves to share her unbridled passion for Pinotage.

The name, ‘Redhill’, is derived from the select vineyard block aptly named ‘Rooibult’ owing to the colour of the famous red hills that surround the Simonsig cellar.

“The terroir of this specific vineyard block with its deep red soil composition of decomposed shale and granite, definitely improves our odds to reap the full potential of this wine,” adds Debbie.

Simonsig Redhill Pinotage 2010 is available at select wine shops country wide and sells for R225.00 at the cellar door. For more information or wine orders contact Simonsig Estate at Tel: (+27)21 888 4915 or visit Simonsig.

Simonsig Wine Estate is located outside Stellenbosch, on the Kromme Rhee road between the R44 and R304.
