Spioenkop Wines Elgin Riesling 2011 93+ Points

Pale straw with green reflections.

Clean, medium plus intensity, delicately ripe lemon, pineapples, white peaches, white flowers, honey and granite minerals.

Fine typicity of New World Riesling, more Clare than Eden Valley.

Dry with high acidity, so much energy here, citric freshness, lemon sherbet, crunchy, yellow citrus juice, nervous style, moderate alcohol (12.93%) this is a Riesling on steroids, a profile common in Eden or Clare valley, Australia, but rarely encountered in South Africa.

The steely structure reminds one of Mosel, but with the fruit concentration, ripeness and oilyness for such a young vintage, suggest more a style bridging Mosel and Clare Valley.

Persistent and long, a cracker maiden vintage made by Koen Roose, another testament that Riesling is indeed at home in Elgin, more so than in any other regions.

This Riesling will develop slowly and is for the long haul, if one looked at the Total Acidity of 8 g/L and a pH of 3, now until 2027+.

A Riesling to watch as the vineyard is only 5 years old.

100% natural ferment.

Will be prefect with salmon sushi.
