Hill&Dale Pinot Grigio 2012
Flat Roof Manor Pinot Rose Light 2012
“The bottle weight of Flat Roof Manor wines was reduced more than a year ago from 560g to 460g. It has now been reduced again by another 50g to 410g, resulting in a further saving of 71kg CO2e for every 1 000 bottles. The weight of Hill&Dale bottles has been reduced by 150g, from 560g to 410g, resulting in a saving of 213kg CO2e for every 1 000 bottles,” says Jacques Rossouw, the environmental manager of Distell, of which Cape Legends forms a part.
Says Cape Legends’ marketing manager Lize-Marie Gradwell: “The light-weighting of our bottles is just one of the ways in which we seek to enhance our eco-reputation. All the grapes for all Cape Legends brands are farmed according to the very progressive Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) set of sustainability principles, and from the 2010 vintage, carry the Sustainability Seal.”
Every seal is individually numbered and reflects a fully traceable sequence from the growing of the grapes to their eventual vinfication and packaging.
Flat Roof Manor wines are made at renowned Stellenbosch estate, Uitkyk, which is a Biodiversity & Wine Initiative (BWI) Champion. The accreditation, which is the highest honour bestowed by the BWI committee is for outstanding efforts to rehabilitate indigenous habitat on the farm. Since becoming a member in 2011, Uitkyk has seen silver trees, which are a member of the protea family, once again appear on the property, while owls, guinea fowl, small buck and caracal have also begun to return.
The estate, at 591 ha one of the largest in the Stellenbosch area, has set aside more than 310 ha of virgin veld, or 52% of the total property, for conservation. The standard requirement for championship status is 10 ha of virgin veld.
