Heston Blumenthal and a host of celebrity chefs heading to Jozi Good Food & Wine Show

Heston Blumenthal

Levi Roots

Heston Blumenthal is regarded as a self-taught gastronomic genius who has influenced chefs and cooks from around the world and he is heading to South Africa for his first ever appearance at the Johannesburg Good Food & Wine Show.

This food and culinary extravaganza takes places at the Coca Cola Dome in Johannesburg from September 21 to 24 and, like previous years, is expected to be a sell-out.

Blumenthal joins a host of international and local chefs including Indian cookery expert Anjum Anand; popular Masterchef Australia winner Adam Liaw on his second visit to Joburg thanks to overwhelming public demand; Rastafarian musician turned Caribbean cooking fundi Levi Roots and children’s TV presenter Katy Ashworth.

Heston is known throughout the world for his acclaimed Michelin-star restaurant The Fat Duck as well as his appearances on TV where he has become known as a food alchemist: “There’s both a greater confidence and much more questioning of our food. We’re more interested in where our ingredients come from than ever before. I think all of that is combining to give us greater confidence in our food culture and greater confidence about eating out in restaurants and cooking at home,” he says.

Apart from his appearance at the show. Blumental will afford South Africans the rare opportunity of sampling a gourmet feast that he will especially devise for diners. It will be prepared by the South African culinary team with Blumenthal supervising. The evening of gourmet wining and dining takes place at the Maserati showroom in Bryanston on Saturday, September 22, and costs R1500 per person. All proceeds go to charity.

Adam Liaw wowed audiences at last year’s Jozi Good Food & Wine Show. What can audiences expect this time around? “I want people to go away and make the dish. They must leave with a few tips and understand how I feel about food. It’s not about showing them what a great cook I am but how easy it is to make food in your own home.”

Anjum Anand’s new book takes you through the history of India and her childhood experiences: “People’s experience of eating Indian food in the west is not a true reflection of the real food we eat at home, which is lighter, fresher and far better balanced than the offerings at Indian restaurants. I try to showcase the true face of Indian food,” she says.

Reggae musician Levi Roots – who once sang Happy Birthday for former President Nelson Mandela - won an entrepreneurial competition thanks to his secret homemade sauce. This lead to a hugely successful food and TV career.

Says Levi:  “I always use one reggae word and that’s ‘fabulocious’ and that’s something better than fabulous, because you know it’s all about the merging of the music and the food and those two are my two greatest passions! For me, it’s not about Levi Roots, it’s about Caribbean food. So I’m hoping to put Caribbean food up there with the rest of the cuisines we see on our TV all the time.”

Ashworth has written a fun-filled programme especially for The Good Food and Wine Show. Says Katy about the programme: “The recipes are all very straightforward but very tasty. They don’t require lots of complex equipment and children can do the majority of the work themselves, with some supervision and perhaps a helping hand when needed. I think it is so important for children to understand where their food comes from so I explain this and even suggest they grow some produce themselves!”

This year’s show is bigger and better than ever before with something for everyone of all ages including fantastic shopping, celebrity chef demonstrations, hands on workshops, wine tasting and a restaurant area.

From the elegant gourmet and dessert specialists to a braai area – this jam-packed programme has something for everyone. With loads of exhibitors from small producers to big brands this year's Good Food & Wine Show is the perfect place to pick up gift ideas and recipe inspirations to impress friends and family.

All the visiting chefs will be staying at the Southern Sun Palazzo MonteCasino.

Entrance tickets to the show (R95 for adults and R50 for children; children under 2 are free) can be bought through Computicket.

GOOD FOOD AND WINE SHOW JOBURG CHEF BIOGRAPHIES

ADAM LIAW

He may have been a young prodigy having matriculated at 15, enrolled in university at age 16 and qualified as a lawyer by 21 but Adam Liaw will tell you that being named the winner of the second season of Masterchef Australia was his proudest moment.
When growing up in Adelaide, there seemed little doubt that Adam’s world would eventually centre on cooking.
“I first remember cooking when I was eight or nine and living with my mum and stepfather,” explains Adam. “With my stepbrothers and sisters, there were eight of us kids in the house and once a month, it would be the kids’ turn to make dinner. We moved around a bit when I was younger, like over to Malaysia, and there would always be some kind of food that I had loved – and wanted to cook – for the whole family.”
He moved to Japan seven years ago, where his love affair with food blossomed.
Since winning Masterchef Australia he has toured the world (including hugely successful visits to South Africa) and has worked in the kitchens of some of his biggest idols like Tetsuya, Gilbert Lau and Peter Gilmore. He has published the cookbook Two Asian Kitchens and is in the process of opening his own Japanese Izakaya, which is like a pub with a casual restaurant.

ANJUM ANAND

Anjum Anand grew up in London but has also lived and studied in Geneva, Paris and Madrid. After gaining business degree she decided to develop her interest in Indian cookery and, in particular, making her native food fresher, lighter and simpler to cook.
She has worked across the world in innovative restaurants such as Café Spice in New York, the Mondrian Hotel in Los Angeles and the Park Royal Hotel’s Indian restaurant in New Delhi but her real love is delicious and stylish food that is simple enough to cook at home.
Anjum was one of the first writers to create and write Indian recipes catering for the health-conscious cook and her first book, Indian Every Day: Light, Healthy Indian Food, was published in 2003. Subsequent books published are Indian Food; Indian Food Made Easy; Anjum’s New Indian and Anjum’s Eat Right for Your Body Type. This has been acclaimed as a ground breaking health, lifestyle and diet book inspired by the principles of Ayurveda and has over 80 healthy eating recipes which span flavours from all cuisines.
Anjum is currently working on her fifth book. She has made the TV series Indian Food Made Easy and she is a regular on television.

HESTON BLUMENTHAL

Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck restaurant gained three Michelin stars in January 2004 and a year later received worldwide recognition for its unique approach to gastronomy and was proclaimed The Best Restaurant in the World by 600 international food critics, journalists and chefs. Blumenthal has been described as a culinary alchemist for his innovative style of cuisine. His papers written in partnership with the University of Reading had him receiving an Honorary Doctorate of Science in 2006. His TV show Heston Blumenthal – In Search of Perfection was awarded a GQ Glenfiddich award in 2007 and was nominated for a BAFTA in 2008.  Feast with Channel 4 was also Bafta nominated in 2010. He has been awarded an OBE for his contribution to British gastronomy by Her Majesty the Queen. In 2007 The Fat Duck was voted The Best Restaurant in Britain by the customers of the UK Good Food Guide and in 2008/2009/2010 was accredited a 10/10, the highest score in the guide awarded by both readers and inspectors. The Fat Duck is currently the only restaurant in the UK to hold this position. Last year saw the launch of Heston’s first restaurant to open outside of Bray, the acclaimed Dinner by Heston Blumenthal.

KATY ASHWORTH

Katy Ashworth has become a household name around the world thanks to presenting CBeebies’ I Can Cook which welcomes children into the kitchen to create a host of delicious meals and snacks that are quick and easy to prepare even if the grown-ups don’t know their way around the kitchen.
Katy is thrilled with the challenge to get under-sixes in the kitchen and cooking up a storm. She says: “This is exactly what I've wanted to do since I was a little girl making home-made TV programmes in my loft. To be given the opportunity to present such a brilliant show that embodies everything I love – food, children and music – was just amazing. I am so proud to be the face of a show that's sending out such a great message and I thank my lucky stars every day!”

LEVI ROOTS

Rastafarian musician Levi Roots hit the big time thanks to his Reggae Reggae Sauce, a mix of barbecue and jerk sauce, which won him a TV competition and later became a leading US supermarket chain’s fastest ever selling product. Prior to that, Levi had been making the sauce from his home kitchen. His secret recipe comes from his grandmother Miriam Small who taught him how to cook from the age of nine in Clarendon, Jamaica.
The rapid popularity of Reggae Reggae Sauce has seen an expansion of the brand, to include a range of sauces and products. His cookery books include Reggae Reggae Cookbook, Caribbean Food Made Easy, Food for Friends, Spice It Up and Sweet.
He is a regular on TV and presented by the BBC show Caribbean Food Made Easy.
His late entry into the culinary field came after a music career. Levi enjoyed touring around the world, performing with James Brown, Dennis Brown, Michael Rose and Black Uhuru. He sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Nelson Mandela when the South African icon visited Brixton and used to play football with Bob Marley every Sunday in Battersea Park.
Levi is always moving with the times and has just launched his own app called Levi Roots’ Sunshine Food ( www.leviapp.com).
