Constantia Glen has
been hailed “a South African sensation” in Switzerland as the top performing
local wine with a near perfect score at The World of First Growths tasting in
Zurich, holding its own alongside the finest French, Italian and Spanish wines.
Constantia Glen FIVE
2008 came joint third with a score of 19/20 in the tasting of 44 of the world’s
best wines including a number of top tier South African entries. A classic
South African Bordeaux-style red, Constantia Glen FIVE 2008 received identical scores
as the top two French Bordeaux wines including the iconic Château
Mouton-Rothschild. The results were published in BLICK, a newspaper from
Switzerland’s biggest online media house. http://www.blick.ch/life/essen/die-groessten-weine-dieses-planeten-id2532263.html
In his review Master
Sommelier Alain Kunz singles out the Constantia Glen flagship for its elegance
and cool climate freshness in comparison to wines from better known Cape
appellations. He describes the wine as well-rounded and immensely powerful with
a “super long” finish.
Constantia Glen FIVE
2008 is an elegant blend of the five Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Franc (36%),
Cabernet Sauvignon (22%), Petit Verdot (15%), Malbec (14%) and Merlot (13%),
aged in 100 % new French oak barrels for 16½ months. The wine has a broad
spectrum of aromas centred round a core of rich black berries, shaped by the
unique location of the vineyards just below Constantia Nek, where slow ripening
grapes lend a wonderful expression of dark berry flavours with finely structured
tannins.
“An exercise in
balance,” is how winemaker Justin van Wyk describes this elegant and refined
wine with superlative ageing potential over the next 10 to 15 years.
Constantia Glen FIVE
2008 is available at fine dining restaurants and boutique wine shops. It sells
at the cellar door for R245 a bottle.
