RAZZMATAJ, AN EXHIBITION OF RAZVAN MACICI WINES AT PENDOCK WINE GALLERY AT THE TAJ

ISSUED BY DKC (DE KOCK COMMUNICATIONS) FOR NEDERBURG WINES

Nederburg cellar master Razvan Macici has handpicked six of his favourite wines to showcase at the Pendock Wine Gallery at The Taj Hotel in June.

The exhibition, dubbed RazzMaTaj by Pendock because of the exciting, very individual and expressive wines in the line-up, will open on Thursday, June 5, at 18:00 and run till the end of the month.

Open to anyone interested in sampling original wines, the gallery can be accessed from the entrance to the hotel in Wale Street.

Macici, a former Diners Club Winemaker of the Year winner, has chosen two whites, three reds and a noble late harvest dessert wine to highlight the diversity of Nederburg's multi-tiered range.

Both the flagship Ingenuity Red and Ingenuity White are represented with vintages never before tasted publicly. He has opted for the richly fruited 2011 vintage of the three-way Italian red blend that brings together Sangiovese, Barbera and Nebbiolo.  He is also showing the 2013 vintage of its companion white blend. It features eight varieties led by Sauvignon blanc, combined with Semillon, Chardonnay, Riesling, Chenin blanc, Viognier, Verdelho and Gewürztraminer.

The Anchorman Chenin Blanc

Macici has selected three examples from the Heritage Heroes collection of gourmet wines, each named after a personality who played a role in developing Nederburg's reputation. The 2012 Anchorman, a wooded Chenin blanc, remembers the farm's founder, Philippus Wolvaart, who established the farm in 1791.  Macici fermented the wine in three different ways. Adding to its originality, one portion underwent carbonic maceration, a technique normally reserved for reds, to impart freshness. It spent nine months on the lees.

One of the reds is the 2010 Motorcycle Marvel, a Rhône-style blend that honours Günter Brözel, a mentor to Macici, who was Nederburg’s cellar master for 33 years and still visits the farm regularly. Big and bold with an explosion of fruit and spice matched by silky tannins, it combines Grenache, Carignan, Shiraz, Mourvèdre and Cinsaut. The other is an elegant and beautifully toned 2010 Bordeaux-style blend, led by Cabernet Sauvignon. Named The Brew Master, it pays tribute to Johann Graue, a former owner of Nederburg, who brought his expertise as a master brewer to the farm, introducing important quality innovations.

The sixth wine is the 2012 Winemaster's Reserve Noble Late Harvest, South Africa's only trophy winner at the 2013 International Sweet Challenge in Australia.
