Morgenster Italian Collection new vintages review

A recent tasting of Morgenster Estate new vintages of Italian Collection, with winemaker Henry Kotze at The Butchers Grill and Shop in Sandton, reveals for the first time his imprint in the “Tosca” Sangiovese blends 2010, as well as his first “Nabucco” Nebbiolo 2010, as well as the dry Sangiovese Rose “Caruso” 2012.

The range shows how Tuscan and Piedmontese varieties grown under South African climate conditions fared, with very fine fruit purity and natural freshness, limited productions offerings, they are hard to criticized, besides the high alcohol.

Henry only acidifies in hot vintages and only if it’s necessary, the focus is on vineyard management, coaxing the best possible fruit and vibrant freshness with as little intervention as possible in the cellar!

The oaked are well judged, with less and less new oak being used, the regime contributed to just the right amount of savory and spicy in the wines.

Morgenster Italian Collection range, is a sexy selections to work with, though they usually start showing their best from 4 years in the bottles, except for the rose of course! Which is best enjoyed within 3 years of vintage, it should be noted however, especially when considering pairings with food that the alcohol is still high at around 14% abv and over, which create some challenge, quickly rectified if the reds are served slightly and given prior aeration/decanting.

Pierre Lurton of Chateau Yquem and Cheval Blanc famed consults to the estate.
