Mount Sutherland Syrah 2009 91 Points

This is the very first Syrah release from vineyard planted in 2004 and South Africa’s only continental terroir, situated in possibly one of the coldest place (in winter) and coolest by local standard (in summer) on the continent, 350 km North East of Cape Town at 1500 meters above sea level, Sutherland-Karoo district, newly demarcated Wine of Origin, in the Northern Cape Geographical Unit
Ruby red with purple rim.
Clean, expressive, quite Northern Rhone in aromatic profile, darker red fruits spectrum, ripe blackcurrant, preserved plums, Ribena like nose, cassis, intense minty blueberry, spicy oak lending delicate smoky note, earthy, slate minerals, pure fruit but borderline jammy/slight raisin note, captivating.
Dry, true Syrah profile, savory with medium plus acidity, ripe medium crunchy tannins, black olives note, brush of graphite, very high alcohol though at 14.5% abv, fully integrated by the mass of fruit concentration, long and energetic, spicy core.
Need decanting/aerating if served now, will keep up to 2020+ if cellared properly.
