Sijnn Swellendam 2009 92 Points

Wine venture by highly praised De Trafford winery of Stellenbosch in the Swellendam district an extreme vineyard at Malgas ward the only vineyard within a 40 km radius, within the Cape South Coast region, 230km east of Cape Town.
Intriguing and successful blend relevant to this vintage of 46% Syrah, 29% Mourvedre, 13% Touriga Nacional, 6% Trincadeira and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon grown on slate and rolled stoned terroir (85% of the structure) quite similar to Chateauneuf du Pape, the vineyard (bush vines trained) are still young at around 6 years old, yielding a mere 3 ton /ha, which is very low by South African standard for such a young vineyard!
Clear, bright, youthful ruby cherry red with purple rim.
Clean, restraint profile, delicately ripe plums, cherries, cranberries, Northern Rhone kind of             St Joseph like, with floral lavender/dried rosemary petal, stony minerals, impressive purity of fruit, subtle oaking, due probably to a higher proportion of old oak used, unshowy, serene, with high alcohol (14% abv) just noticeable, but holding well within limit of structure.
Dry with medium plus acidity, savory saline mineral, delicate extraction, ripe medium tannin lending just the perfect crunch, subtle and juicy with notes of plums and sour cherries, sappy freshness, long and lingering.
Perfect now but will be better from 2016 up to 2021+ if cellared properly.
R 180 per bottle from the farm is an absolute bargain for the quality and history behind it, herewith an original corporate Christmas gift that will not disappoint!
